After several years of working for his dad, Ralph, on paving crews at Hot Roll Paving, Don Cumpton continued the family tradition of entrepreneurship. In 1957, Hot Roll Manufacturing began making the equipment and tools that paving crews used. In 1959, Don married the love of his life, Maria. She became his wife as well as his business partner. Don went on to design and patent various rollers and large pieces of equipment. The business grew, adding a full-time secretary and factory workers.

Over the years, the couple perfected the product line, dropped the large equipment, and focused on small hand tools. They incorporated the business on April 15, 1969. The Cumptons had two daughters, Luana Maria and Misty Dawn, in the early 1970’s and trained them in the family business from a young age. The Cumptons changed the company name to Black Top Tools, Inc. on April 25, 1986 to better suit their evolving identity.

Black Top Tools has seen many changes in the industry over the past six decades. It held fast as many of its competitors were bought out by larger conglomerates or dissolved into history.Today, the corporation prevails. In the summer of 2013, Maria passed away suddenly. Don died seven weeks later. The Cumptons’ eldest daughter, Luana, is now at the helm. She plans on continuing the legacy. . .
